May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. As a Taiwanese American and leader at Creator TV, I’m proud that our company is recognizing and celebrating the AANHPI community in front of and behind the camera at our network.
Our diverse AANHPI community has been a part of American history, culture and society since the 16th century, and today, we continue to be a part of the American story. At Creator TV, our mission is to increase representation in television by showcasing creator-led programming that better reflects today’s diverse world. For me, this resonates with who you see on Creator TV, AND who is behind the scenes making it happen.
Representation in media means a lot to me – especially in leadership roles. When I started my career in entertainment, it was exciting, but it was also daunting because I did not see much representation, whether it was those from underrepresented communities or women, I did not have many role models to look up to.
Then I met a female executive who would later become my mentor, and everything changed. I saw and witnessed the power of representation – my mentor led with integrity, smarts and kindness, proving that women from underrepresented communities can, and DO hold positions of power.
Today, I carry that inspiration in my work here at Creator TV and in the community as a volunteer, because my hope is the next generation of Taiwanese American girls, and girls from every background, do see me, and know that they can do anything.
